Feelings about the closure of Kent pits under Margaret Thatcher still run strong amongst Kentish ex-miners. Kentish miners were the most radical and stayed out on strike longer than all the other pits in the country. These were two of things discovered by Oakwood Park Grammar School students as they made their Heritage Lottery funded film ‘The Enemy Within’. The Maidstone students were lucky to find that the school community was able to provide contacts with retired policemen who policed the strike, willing to talk on camera about their experiences of the strike in the Kentish coalfields. The students contacted the Betteshanger Heritage centre in the Kent coal fields and interviewed miners and their families. The Sixth Form students soon found themselves investigating the contradictions between the accounts given by the miners and those given by the police.
