OPGS has a strong ethos of contributing to the school and wider community through its volunteering programme. The Sixth Form have won the Rotary Club Volunteering Trophy in 2017 and 2018 for their work supporting Cancer Research. Year 12 students take part in voluntary work, ranging from academic mentoring in OPGS to teaching lessons in local primary schools and work for local charities. Where possible, students will volunteer in an area that matches their future plans. Their years’ volunteering has taken the form at stewarding at music festivals, such as The Vicar’s Picnic which are help in aid of charities such at The Dandelion Foundation.
The school prides itself on its chary fundraising as it not only uses pupil power to benefit others, but also enables students to work in a team and get experience liaising with external agencies. Over the last three years the Sixth Form, working with the whole school and the wider community, have raised close to £40,000 for charities with which our students or their families have had personal involvement such as Teenage Cancer Trust, Mind and Maidstone Mencap. This year our charity choices are The Dandelion Foundation and Teenage Cancer Trust. Fundraising initiatives have included popular annual evens such as ‘The Prefect Show’, along with cake sales and non-school uniform days.
